Holistic Dentistry is a Philosophy, Not a Procedure

Holistic dentistry is generally considered to be a perspective on dental practice that incorporates alternative therapies, such as acupuncture and Chinese medicine, in the treatment of dental conditions. While these alternative therapies receive the most attention when discussing Holistic Dentistry, I don’t believe that the therapies themselves define the practice, rather the general philosophy that oral health is part of an interconnected system should be considered the core principle of Holistic Dentistry, and all dentists can incorporate this core principle into their practice.
The defining feature of Holistic Dentistry, the connection between oral and systemic health, is supported by several evidence-based examples widely accepted in conventional dentistry. One such example is the link between gum disease and heart infections. An infection of the heart, known as endocarditis, is sometimes caused by the bacteria found in the mouth. The bacteria from the mouth get to the heart through the blood. Research has found a clear relationship between gum disease and the frequency and intensity of periods of bacteria in the blood [1]. The Holistic perspective would support encouraging a patient with gum disease to stay on top of their deep cleanings and hygiene schedule in order to protect the heart.
Another instance in which a Holistic perspective benefits the general dentist is in the treatment of pain. Pain is understood to be a multidimensional phenomenon. Consider a toothache; nerve signals to the brain and the release of pain causing substances from the tooth are responsible for the physical dimension of pain. There are also spiritual and psychological components to pain. A lack of function due to pain can affect a patient's emotions and lead to depression. The spiritual dimension of pain relates to how a patient's painful experience influences their perception of their identity. By utilizing a holistic perspective, a dentist can target the multiple facets of pain.
Dr Josephs practices general dentistry in Palm Beach, incorporating holistic principles. While working in New York City he shadowed Dr David Lerner DDS, author of “The Dental Connection,” a book about the role of Holistic Dentistry in the healing paradigm.
